Thus:
"So, I had Cheneys on both sides of the family — and we don't even live in West Virginia," Cheney cracked. After pausing for laughter from the crowd, Cheney added, "You can say those things when you're not running for re-election."
As the CNN item detailing this adds:
Afterward, West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd lashed out at Cheney for the "insult to all Americans." In a written statement, Byrd declared that Cheney showed "contempt and astounding ignorance toward his own countrymen" with the comments.Sadly, that weird old Byrd just went into the hospital tonight. Damn. First Our (drunken) Man Ted, now the aged one (I had no idea he was 3rd in line to the presidency... can you fucking imagine?). If Kennedy has to retire, we're pretty safe (but not completely) with his replacement being a Democrat. But for Byrd in West Virginia?
On the Daily Show, they interviewed some random W Virginians on the day of their primary, asking why people weren't voting for Obama. Those made for some other great quotes (paraphrasing here): "I ain't votin' for no Muslim," and "his middle name's Hussein... I had enough'a Husseins."

Of course you always hope the best for someone in serious jeopardy of life or health. But Robert Byrd is hardly an example of the best that the Democratic Party has to offer. Not only does he have a history of incredible waste of government resources, but he has a history of shockingly racist statements, and back in the 50's held the rank of Kleagle, and then Exalted Cyclops in the Ku Klux Klan.
Hey, I wasn't saying I'm in love with the guy. He knows better than anyone what his sins were, and for a racist bastard of several decades, he's made amazing changes, as evidenced in his records and statements.
Imagine if, when he joined the KKK in whenever (just looked it up in Wiki) - the early 40s - that he'd one day back a black man for president! A pretty unique story. As for his waste... are there actually many in congress that don't waste the country's money? At least he waged war against the war from the get-go.
In any event, sooner or later we'll be losing him, and a Republican will probably take his place. Republicans bad. Democrats not as bad.
